The political contest in Punjab has been bipolar for the most part until now with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress as the two main contenders. In the 2011 assembly elections, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's estranged nephew Manpreet Singh Badal launched the People's Party of Punjab. The Akali Dal, another breakaway outfit of the Shiromani Akali Dal, was launched by Surjit Singh Barnala in 2004.
