Odisha Elections 2019

Assembly polls will be held simultaneously with Lok Sabha Elections in Odisha. Elections for the 147 Assembly seats and the 21 Lok Sabha seats will be held in 4 phases - April 11, 18, 23 and 29. The counting of votes will be on May 23.

In a three cornered high profile battle, candidates from major political parties including the, BJD, BJP and the Congress will be contesting for 21 seats beginning April 11. The state is the stronghold of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). In 2014 Odisha Assembly election, the ruling party, Biju Janata Dal, gained the majority of seats (117) to form the government again. In 2009 Odisha Assembly election, despite having recently separated from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), after an eleven years, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) retained power with a convincing majority of 100 seats.

Some of the keys issues are poverty, rural backwardness, migration of labour. Major opposition parties - BJP and Congress are fiercely fighting hard against the ruling government. Congress had made several promises like farm loan waivers, financial assistance for higher education and marriage of daughters, assured water connection. BJP has promised to houses for poor, jobs for the unemployed etc.
