Meghalaya Parliament Election 2015


Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Friday said the BJP's sweeping victory in the Lok Sabha polls was largely due to the anti-incumbency factor against the ruling Congress across the country.

"The list of causes for the Congress' defeat can vary... anti-incumbency coupled with inflation is one of the main factors for the BJP's landslide victory," Sangma told

Meghalaya is a state in north-eastern India. There are two parliamentary constituencies Shillong and Tura and both are reserved for the ST candidates. The state has an area of 22,429 km with population of 2,964,007, of which 2,368,971 are rural and just 595,036 urban. There are 13, 16,201 voters in Meghalaya of which 629,436 are males and 648,303 females.

The Shillong Parliamentary constituency is reserved for the ST category. Shillong is the capital and the largest city of Meghalaya. It has a total of 771,965 electorates of which 397,252 are females and 374,713 are males. Its population is 3, 50,000 and boasts of a sex ratio of 1,006 females per 1,000 males.

The Tura Lok Sabha Constituency is also reserved for ST in Meghalaya. It has 505,774 number of electorates, of them 254,723 are males and 251,051 are females. Tura is also one of the largest towns in the state. It has a population of about 60,000. The sex ratio here is 952 females per 1,000 males.
