Haryana went into polling for its 90-member legislative assembly on Oct 13, 2009. It was almost taken for granted that Congress will retain power in the state. Congress and Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) was expected to gain the Jat community vote that the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) lost. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also contested in the polls.
On the counting day, initially trends showed a sweeping victory for the Congress in the 2009 Haryana Assembly Polls, the party fell short of a majority.
