30 km from Gopalpur, the temple of the twin goddesses Tara and Tarini on the bank of the Rushikulya river is located on the top of a hill. Believed to be a Shakti Pitha of Tantricism, the shrine can be reached by a taking some one thousand steps or by a good moorable road. During the Hindu month of Chaitra (march-April) the shrine plays host to one of Odisha’s biggest fairs, the “Taratarini Mela”, visitd by thousands of people. Taratarani is 32km from Berhampur.


Nestled in the slopes of the Eastern Ghats, Taptapani, 67 km from Gopalpur and 50 kms to the north of Berhampur, is famous for its hot sulphur spring known for its medicinal values. Located in the in the Ganjam district of Odisha, the place is also a sacred place as it is home to the shrine of Goddess Kandhuni. a small Deer park is an added attraction here.

Mahuri Kalua

30km from Gopalpur, the beautiful spot of Mahuri Kalua is visited for its temple dedicated to Goddess Kalua. 15 km away from Berhampur, the place is situated on the way to Taptapani.


Also called Jaugarh, Jaugada, 35km from Gopalpur, is famous in Indian history for being home to an Ashokan edict. Located in the Ganjam duistrict of Odisha, it is also famous for a Shiva shrine.

35 km north of Behrampur, Jaugada in the Malati hills is famous for a 3rd century BC rock edict erected by Ashoka, following the battle of Kalinga and his embracing Buddhism. The edict is similar to one at Dhauli in which the great emperor speaks out his ethical code, though most parts of the inscriptions have disappeared. Ruins of a 6th century fort at Jaugada belonging to Keshari dynasty contain stone images enshrined in the Guptesvar temple.

Jaugada is approachable from Purusottampur which has the bus services from Behrampur. At short distance away at Buguda, is the Biranchinarayan temple. The 17th century has beautifully carved wooden Jagamohana (porch) depicting scenes from the Ramayana. 2km from Jaugada, Buddhakhol has Buddhist sculptures and temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
