Angul Tourism

Covered with lush green forests, Angul, headquarters of the district of the same name in Odisha, is rich in varieties of wildlife. The Mahanadi river passes through the district forming a 22 km long narrow gorge, one of the highest gorges in India. Popularly known as “Satkoshia”, it is a biological refuge for varieties of crocodiles. 10 kms from Angul, Banarpal is on the junction of NH42 and NH 23 and is a convenient base for tourists.

Satkoshia Wildlife Sanctuary

30 kms from the Angul town, Satkoshia Wildlife Sanctuary is the natural habitat for pangolin, barking deer, mouse deer, spotted deer, chousingha, samber, Nilgai, elephant, gaur, wildboar, wild dog, jackal, wolf, tiger, leopard etc. Sizable population of elephants is also seen in this sanctuary.

Samal

Samal, 40 kms from Angul, is known for Hydroelectric Project and firm favourite for picnickers. Samal is 20 kms from Talcher.

Bhimakand

50 kms from Angu, Bhimakand is noted for a large sand rock on which is is an open air rock-cut image of Vishnu in sleeping posture known as Anantashayi Vishnu or Anantashayana Vishnu. This sleeping image of Vishnu at Bhimakand is second after the colossal Gometshwar statue in Karnataka in size. However, Bhimakand’s claim to fame lies in its being home to the largest sleeping idol in India.

Deulajhari

90 kms from Angul is Deulajhari, which is home to a Siva temple. The place is also famous for a hot water spring believed to have medicinal properties. You can reach Deulajhari on foot or by jeep from Athamallick which is three km away from here. Regular bus services connect Athamallick with Angul, Talcher, Dhenkanal, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

Rengali

A day in the beautiful surroundings of Rengali dam will be fabulous for the spirit. Rengali dam, built on the Brahmani River, is a famous travel attraction. The scenic landscape, fresh entices the picnickers. Rengali is 85 kms from Angul.
