Once a pocket-borough of the veteran congress leader and strongman Rajo Singh who was gunned down in 2005, Sheikhpura assembly constituency in southeast Bihar is currently held by Randhir Kumar Soni of the Janata Dal (United) who won the seat for the Janata Dal (United) by defeating the sitting Congress MLA Sunila Devi by a margin of 7342 votes in the last general assembly elections to Bihar in 2010.
In that election, while Randhir Kumar Soni had received 31507 votes, Sunila Devi, daughter-in-law of Rajo Singh, had polled 24165 votes and was followed by Lalan Kumar of the Lalu Prasad led Janata Dal (United) with 18473 votes.
Earlier Sunila Devi had won both the assembly elections to the Sheikhpura seat in 2005 for the Congress. Her husband Sanjay Singh, a minister in the RJD government, had emerged victorious from the seat in 2000 by a massive margin of 60537 votes.
He was also elected from the seat in a byepoll in 1998 which was necessitated due to the election of his father Rajo Singh to the Lok Sabha from Begusarai in 1998. Sanjay Singh had died of heart attack soon after the pronouncement of his conviction by a court of law in a case of massacre of eight RJD members in 2001. Rajo Singh was also an accused in the case.
Earlier Rajo Singh was elected from the Sheikhpura assembly seat for five times in a row from 1977. He had emerged victorious from the seat in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995. He entered the Bihar legislative assembly in 1972 from the Barbigha seat as an Independent. Ashok Choudhary, currently the president of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee, was also in jail for the murder of rajo Singh.
One of two assembly segmentsa located in the district of the same name, Sheikhpura is one of the six assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the parliamentary constituency of Jamui which is currently represented by Chirag Paswan of the LJP who won it by defeating his nearest RJD rival Sudhansu Shekhar Bhaskar in 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The JDU nominee and Bihar speaker Uday Narayan Choudhary was relegated to the third place.
Chakai, Tarapur, Sikandra, Jamui and Jhajha are other five assembly segments located in the Lok Sabha constituency of Jamui, reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled castes.
It was peaceful polling in the first phase of Bihar assembly election in which voters in 49 assembly constituencies exercised their franchise on Oct 12. The voter turnout recorded until 4 pm in Sheikhpura 53.06%.
JD(U) has fielded Randhir Kumar Soni who will take on Naresh Sao of Hindustani Awami Morcha (HAM) in Sheikpura. According to analysts, it will be a keen tussle as both these contestants have their support base in the constituency. Moreover, the candidates have their task cut out as people are bound to be swayed by campaign on issues of interest to the local people.
