One of the six assembly constituencies located in the district of Araria in the state of Bihar, Narpatganj is currently represented by Devanti Yadav of the BJP who polled 61106 votes to defeat Anil Kumar Yadav of Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin of 6937 votes in the last assembly polls in 2010. Former BJP MLA Janardan Yadav was denied ticket by the BJP to contest the seat in 2010. Bhartendu Prasad Yadav, who contested on the ticket of the Congress, came third with 8782 votes.
Earlier Janardan Yadav had won the October assembly election to the seat in 2005 by defeating the sitting RJD MLA Anil Kumar Yadav by a margin 4207 votes. Anil Kumar Yadav had defeated him in the precious assembly poll held in February in that year. It is worth mentioning that Bihar went to the assembly polls twice in 2005 because the earlier one held in February threw hung assembly necessitating the holding of the second assembly polls in the month of November of the same year.
Narpatganj assembly constituency had sent Janardan Yadav to the Bihar legislative assembly in 1977, 1980 and 2000. While he won the seat in 1977 as a candidate of the Janata Party, his wins in 1980 and 2000 came as a member of the BJP. Dayanand Yadav had won the Narpatganj seat for the Janata Dal in 1990 and 1995.
Since 1977 the Congress has been able to win only once from Narpatganj in 1985 when its candidate claimed the seat by defeating Satya N. Yadav of Lok Dal by a margin of 8731 votes. He was defeated by Dayanand Yadav in 1990.
A Yadav dominated constituency, Narpatganj is one of the six assembly segments that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of Araria the same name which is currently represented by Tasilmuddin of the RJD who won it by defeating his nearest rival and sitting MP Pradeep Kumar Singh by a margin of 146506 votes in the last Lok Sabha general elections in 2014.
Janardan Yadav from BJP will take on Anil Kumar Yadav from RJD in Narpatganj. It may be noted that Anil Kumar was the runner-up in the election held in 2010 and was defeated by sitting MLA Devanti Yadav. It will be an intense fight between two Yadavs and both have a 50:50 chance of winning this segment. This time BJP has denied ticket to its sitting MLA Devanti Yadav from Narpatganj.
A case was filed in the court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) by a native of Tamganj village under Narpatganj police station Pintu Kumar who charged RJD chief Lalu Prasad Prasad with hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus by claiming that some from the community too eat beef. The complainant has also expressed concern that Lalu Prasad's remarks may affect peace and law and order in the state.
