Madhuban, located in the eastern Champaran district and consists of Pakridayal, Madhuban and Phenhara community development blocks. Madhuban lies in the Sheohar Lok Sabha Constituency. A total of 2,09,606 people have the right to vote of whom there are 1,11,937 men and 97,642 women.
Shivjee Rai of the Janata Dal (United) is the sitting MLA from Madhuban assembly constituency located in Purvi Champaran district of Bihar. In the last general assembly elections to the state, he retained the seat by defeating Rana Randhir of the Rashtirya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin 10122 votes. While 40478 votes were polled in favour of Shivjee Rai, Rana Randhir, a former Madhuban legislator, received 30356 votes. Former RJD MLA from Kesaria, Babloo Deo, who contested on the ticket of the Congress, came third with 15248 votes.
As things stand today, the BJP and the JD (U) have parted ways and the Lok Janashakti Party (LJP), the ally of the RJD in the last assembly elections, is now a part of the BJP led NDA, the ruling dispensation at the Centre. The RJD, the JD (U) and the Congress have come together to check the BJP.
One of the twelve assembly segments located in the Purvi Champaran district of Bihar, Madhuban was also won by Shivjee Rai in the penultimate assembly elections held in the month of 2005 by defeating Rana Randhir by a massive margin of 19478 votes. Rana Randhir had earlier trounced Shivjee Rai by a margin of 3191 votes in February that year which was necessitated due to the hung assembly thrown by the February polls,.
Earlier, Maoists infested Madhuban assembly constituency had elected Rana Randhir's father, Sita Ram Singh, four times in a row. While Sita Ram Singh's first win in 1985 came as a candidate of the Janata Party, he won the seat in 1990 and 1995 as a nominee of the Janata Dal. A former minister in the Rabri Devi cabinet, Sita Ram Singh was the winner in 2000 as a member of the RJD.
Once a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (CPI), the party had claimed the Madhuban seat in 1967, 1969 and 1972.
Madhuban is one of the six assembly constituencies that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of Sheohar which is currently represented by Rama Devi of the BJP who retained the seat BY Defeating former Sheohar MP and RJD candidate Mohammad Anwarul Haque in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Other five assembly constituencies that fall under the Sheohar Lok Sabha seat are Chiraia, Dhaka, Sheohar, Riga and Belsand.
Sitting MLA Shivji Rai of JD(U) will contest in Madhuban facing Rana Randhir Singh from BJP in a tough battle in Madhuban in East Champaran district. Shivjee Rai is the sitting MLA of Madhuban segment of the assembly. In the 2010 assembly election, Rai beat Rana Randhir who was then representing RJD with a margin of over 10,000 votes. Shivji Rai won 40,478 votes, while Rana Randhir managed 30,356 votes. However, this time Rai will be finding it difficult as BJP riding a wave of popularity especially among the youth and women. But the cast factor gives an edge to the JD(U) candidate over his BJP rival.
