Electoral History of Kishanganj Constituency in Bihar

Kishanganj legislative assembly constituencies part of Lok Sabha segment of the same name. A total of 2,42,175 people are identified as eligible voters in the Kishanganj among them are 1,22,690 men and 1,19,476 women. Kishanganj assembly segment comprises Pothia community development block, Kishanganj municipality and Taisa, Motihara Toluka, Halamala and Singhia Kulamani gram panchayats of Kishanganj CD block.

One of the four assembly constituencies located in the district of the same name in Bihar, Kishanganj is currently held by Mohammad Jawaid of the Congress who had defeated his nearest BJP rival Sweety Singh by a narrow margin of 264 votes in the last general assembly elections to Bihar.

In that election, while Mohammad Jawaid polled 38867 votes, Sweety Singh received 38603 votes and was followed by Tasiruddin of the Lalu Yadav's Rashtirya Janata Dal (RJD) who obtained 22074 votes. Under the seat sharing arrangement between the BJP and the Janata Dal (United), the Kishanganj seat was allotted to the former. However, as things stand today, the BJP and the JD (U) have parted ways.

Kishanganj is one of the only four assembly constituencies which had elected the Congress candidates in 2010. Kasba, Bahadurgan and Kahalgaon are the other three. While Kasba and Bahadurgan were won by Afaq Alam and Mohammad Tausif Alam respectively, the Kahalgaon seat went in favour of former assembly speaker Sadanand Singh.

Earlier Akhtarul Iman of the RJD had both the elections to the Kishangaj seat in 2005. It is worth mentioning that Bihar went to the assembly polls twice in 2005 because the earlier one held in February threw hung assembly necessitating the holding of the second assembly polls in the month of November of the same year. Akhtarul Iman had won the Kochadhaman assembly seat in 2010. He vacated the seat to contest the Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat as a JD (U) nominee in the last general parliamentary elections in 2014 but later withdrew his candidature. JD (U)'s Mujahid Alam won the Kochadhaman seat in the byepoll necessitated due to Akhtarul Iman's resignation from the seat.

Kishanganj had also been represented by Bihar heavyweight politician and turncoat Tasilmuddin who was elected from the seat in 2000. Tasilmuddin was a minister in the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh.

Kishanganj is one of the six assembly segments that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of the same name which is currently represented by Mohammad Asrarul Haque of the Congress who won it by defeating his nearest rival Dr Dilip Kumar Jaiswal of the BJP by a margin of 192612 votes in the last Lok Sabha general elections in 2014.

Sitting Congress MLA Dr Jawaid files nomination

Updated on : Oct-12,2015

Dr Jawaid files his nomination papers Sitting MLA Dr Mohammed Jawaid of Congress is taking on Sweety Singh of BJP in Kishanganj. Dr Jawaid filed his nomination papers for contesting in his home constituency on 12 October (Monday). AIMIM, which has been restricted to Hyderabad for past several decades, has decided to contest in Muslim dominated Seemanchal region, thereby giving sleepless nights to Nitish Kumar-Lalu Prasad Yadav-Congress alliance.

Seemanchal comprises the north-eastern region of the state with its districts - Araria, Purnea, Katihar and Kishanganj - having 24 assembly seats. The disconnect between the political class and the youth is glaring in this region bordering Nepal and West Bengal. The districts of Kishanganj, Purnea, Araria and Katihar present a dismal picture when it comes to education, yet evidences suggest there is no dearth of talent here.

Dr Jawaid emerged victorious in the 2010 assembly election by winning 38,867 votes against 38,603 votes won by Sweety Singh of BJP. Kishanganj assembly segment is in Kishanganj district of Bihar. Before 2008, there used to be two different assembly constituencies in Bihar by the name Kishanganj before the implementation of the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India.

Police file FIR against OwaisiAn FIR was lodged against All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi by Kishanganj district administration on 5 October (Monday) for allegedly making inflammatory speech. He was speaking at an election rally in Kishanganj the day before on Sunday.

If Asaduddin Owaisi's party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) wants to make an impact in Bihar election, then Kishanganj will be a key factor with its 70% Muslim population. The Hyderabadi lawmaker has no experience in Bihar politics. But his announcement of contesting elections in four Muslim-dominated districts was noted with interest by all political parties.

And long before his announcement, the crowds had flocked to his rally in Kishenganj. But the question uppermost in the minds of everyone is that if crowds can translate into votes in an area that has been a traditional stronghold of the Congress, the RJD and the Janata Dal - especially now that the three parties are in alliance?
