Electoral History of Bihariganj Constituency in Bihar

One of the four assembly constituencies located in the Madhepura district of Bihar, Bihariganj is currently represented by Renu Kushwaha of the Janata Dal (united) who had defeated Prabhash Kumar of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a massive margin of 49997 votes in the last general assembly elections to Bihar in 2010.

In the 2010 election to the Bihariganj constituency, whereas Renu Kushwaha had polled 79062 votes, the RJD nominee received 29065 votes and was closely followed by the Congress candidate Ranjeet Ranjan who got 27554 votes. Ranjeet Ranjan, currently the Congress MP from Supaul parliamentary constituency, is the wife of Rajesh Ranjan, more famously known as Pappu Yadav, who was convicted of murdering the former by a lower court. Pappu yadav was later acquitted of the charges by the higher court. Pappu Yadav is the sitting MP from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat which he won in the last parliamentary elections in 2014 by defeating the then sitting JD(U) MP Sharad Yadav.

Apart from Supaul, Kishanganj is the other Lok Sabha seat in Bihar won by the Congress. Bihar has a total of 40 parliamentary seats.

Renu Kushwaha's husband Vijay Singh Kushwaha unsuccessfully contested the Madehpura Lok Sabha seat in 2014 parliamentary elections. Renu Kushwaha, a former industry minister in the Nitish Kumar government, resigned from the cabinet when her husband joined the BJP to contest the Madhepura seat. Earlier she had been elected from the erstwhile Kishanganj assembly seat not to be confused with another constituency of the same name in Bihar.

Bihariganj assembly constituency, which came into being before the 2010 elections in place of Kishanganj on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, is one of the six assembly constituencies that combine to form the parliamentary constituency of Madhepura which is currently represented by Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav of the RJD who won the seat by defeating the sitting JD (U) MP Sharad Yadav by a margin of 56,209 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Vijay Singh Kushwaha, who contested on the ticket of the BJP, came third.

Other five assembly constituencies that fall under the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat are Alamnagar, Madhepura, Sonbarsha, Saharsa and Mahishi.
