About Barh Assembly Elections Constituency

Barh is a legislative assembly constituency is located in the Patna district of the state. It is a part of the Munger Lok Sabha constituency, The Barh assembly segment is home to 2,46,238 people who hold the right to vote. Amongst all the voters in the constituency, there are 1,34,523 males and 1,11,709 females. The Barh legislative assembly constituency consists of Bihari Bigha, Dhiwar, Goasa Shekhpura and Parsawan gram panchayats of Pandarak community development block; Barh community development block; Athmalgola community development block; and Belchhi community development block.


Electoral History of Barh Constituency in Bihar

One of the assembly segments located in the district of Patna, Barh assembly constituency is currently being held by the sitting Janata Dal (united) MLA Gyanendra Kumar Singh, alias Gyanoo who won the seat second time by defeating his nearest rival Vijay Krishna of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by a margin of 19395 votes in the last assembly elections to Bihar in 2010. In that election, while Vijay Krishna had polled 53129 votes. Vijay Krishna had secured 33734 votes and was followed by independent candidate Jitendra Prasad Singh who secured 10114 votes.

Son of a former MLA, Vijay Kumar Singh who entered the fray on the ticket of the Congress was relegated to the fifth place with 2570 votes. Anwesh Kumar Chaudhary, son of an ex-legislator, contested as an Independent and came a poor ninth with just 1468 votes.

Gyanendra Kumar Singh had emerged victorious from the Barh in October-November 2005 by Anil Kumar Singh of the RJD by a margin of 13676 votes. His legislative assembly membership has been terminated by the Bihar Assembly Speaker Udai Narayan Singh for anti-party activities in the by-election to the three Rajya Sabha seats in June 2014.

In the previous assembly elections held in February in 2005, Barh was won by Lovely Anand who contested on the ticket of the JD (U). Lovely Anand, wife of Anand Mohan, who was convicted for murder and is languishing in jail, had won the famed Vaishali Lok Sabha byepoll in 1994 by defeating Kishori Sinha, wife of a Congress Chief Minister Satyendra Narain Sinha. She had won the Nabinagar assembly seat in a byepoll in 1996. Lovely Anand unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Sheohar Lok Sabha seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket.

Vijay Krishna, a Rajput by caste, had been a Janata Dal MLA from the Barh assembly seat from 1990 to 2000. A minister in the RJD government, he had won the Barh parliamentary seat in 2004 by defeating Nitish Kumar. He is presently serving life imprisonment in connection with a murder case.

Barh is one of the seven assembly constituencies that combine to create the Munger parliamentary constituency currently represented by Veena Devi of the Ram Vilas Paswan led Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) who won the seat by defeating his nearest JD (U) rival Rajiv Ranjan Singh Alias Lalan Singh by a margin of 109084 votes in the last parliamentary elections in 2014.

Munger, Jamalpur, Suryagarha, Lakhisarai, Mokama and Barahiya are the other six assembly constituencies falling under the Munger Lok Sabha seat.

Nitish's loyalist is candidate

Manoj Kumar, an old ally and loyalist of Nitish Kumar, has travelled a long way with the CM. In 1988, he joined hands with Nitish as a student and now he will be contesting from Barh as grand-alliance's candidate. Manoj is a three-time winner of zila parishad elections from 2001 to 2015. He had helped and worked for the CM during the 1989 Lok Sabha elections from Barh and since then he has been with Nitish. Manoj will be contesting against NDA's Gyandra Kumar. Further, the JD(U) candidate claims that NDA will have a shameful fall this time from Barh.
