As things stand today, the Wadakkanchery Assembly constituency is all set for intense contest between LDF and UDF which has been favoured more than the former in the electoral history of the constituency. While the Congress has won the seat eight times, the LDF has emerged victorious four times.
In the local body elections, the Wadakkanchery municipality was won by the LDF which had also triumphed in five panchayats which are parts of the constituency. The UDF managed to claim only two panchayats.

C.N. Balakrishnan is the sitting MLA of Wadakkanchery assembly seat which he won on behalf of Congress by defeating his nearest rival N.R. Balan of the CPI (M) by 6,685 votes in a bipolar fight. In that election, while C.N. Balakrishnan, a minister in the current UDF government, polled 67911 votes, N.R. Balan received 61226 votes and was followed by BJP’s Shajumon Vattekad who got 7451 votes.
In the 2004 by-election, K. Muraleedharan, who was the Electricity Minister at that time, was defeated by CPM’s A.C. Moideen.
Wadakkanchery assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Wadakkanchery municipality as well as the grama panchayats Mulangunnathukavu, Thekkumkara, Avanur, Kaiparambu, Kolazhy Tholur and Adattu.
As of now, Wadakkanchery assembly constituency has a total electorate of 195095. Of them, 102256 are women voters and 92839 are males.
Located in the Thrissur district in Kerala, Wadakkanchery is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Alathur. Tarur, Chittur, Nemmara, Alathur, Kunnamkulam and Chelakkara are the other six assembly segments located within the Alathur Lok Sabha constituency.
