Vengara is one of the safest seats for Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a constituent of the United Democratic front (UDF). While the IUML has fielded its sitting MLA P.K. Kunhalikutty to contest the Vengara seat in 2016 assembly polls P P Bashir from CPIM is the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate.

Currently, Vengara assembly constituency is held by P.K. Kunhalikutty of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) who won the seat in its maiden election in 2011 by defeating LDF-backed Indian National League (INL) candidate K.P. Ismail by a whopping margin of 38,237 votes in a bipolar contest. While 63138 votes were polled in favour of Kunhalikutty, the INL nominee received 24,901votes and was followed by BJP’s Abdul Majeed Faizi who got 4683 votes.
Earlier Kunhalikutty had won the erstwhile Kuttippuram seat in 1991, 1996 and 2001.
One of the sixteen assembly constituencies located in the Malappuram district in Kerala, Vengara constituency came into being 2011 and was carved out of the Tirurangadi, Malappuram and Tanur assembly constituencies. The constituency is formed by the areas covered by gram panchayats of A.R. Nagar, Parappur, Kannamangalam, Vengara, Othukkungal and Oorakam.
Vengara is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Malappuram. Manjeri, Kondotty, Perinthalmanna, Mankada, Malappuram and Vallikunnu are the other six within the Malappuram parliamentary constituency.
Vengara is one of the few constituencies in the Malappuram district where men outnumber female voters. In 2011 election to the constituency, out of the total electorate of 144317, men constituted 73577 and females numbered at 70740.
