The CPI (M)-led LDF is hoping to wrest the seat from the UDF in the 2016 assembly elections. In 2015 local body elections, the LDF has won the Varkala municipality and six of the seven grama panchayats and the solitary block panchayat that are part of the Varkala assembly constituency. Under the seat sharing arrangement with the BJP has allotted the seat to Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) which has fielded S.R Aji for 2016 assembly polls.

Currently Varkala assembly constituency is held by Varkala Kahar, who won the seat third time in a row in 2011 defeating CPI (M) candidate A.A Rahim by a margin of 10,710 votes. While 57755 votes were polled in favour of Kahar, Rahim received 47045 votes and was distantly followed by BJP’s Elakaman Satheesan who got 3430 votes.
With a sizeable population of Ezhava community, Varkala has total electorate of 175419. Of them, 95981 are male voters and 79438 are women voters.
Home to Sivagiri, which comes lauded as the birth place of prominent social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, Varkala assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by the Varkala municipality as well as seven gram panchayats and one block panchayat.
Varkala one of the seven assembly segments that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Attingal. Kattakada, Attingal, Chirayinkeezhu, Nedumangad, Vamanapuram and Aruvikkara are the other six assembly constituencies within Attingal Lok Sabha seat.
