Vamanapuram is a bastion of the CPI (M) which has never lost an election to the seat since 1977. While the party has nominated D.K. Murali to contest the seat in 2016 assembly election, T Saratchandra Prasad of the Congress is in the fray on behalf of the UDF. Under the seat sharing arrangement with the BJP, Vamanapuram has been allotted to the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) which has given ticket to R.V. Nikhil.

Vamanapuram assembly constituency is currently held by CPIM’s Koliyakkode N. Krishnan Nair who won the seat fifth time in 2011 by defeating is nearest rival C. Mohanachandran of the Congress by a margin of 2236 votes in a bipolar contest.
While 59510 votes were polled in favour of Krishnan Nair, the Congress member secured 55145 votes, Karette Sivaprasad, who entered the fray on the ticket of BJP, was relegated to the third place with 5228 votes.
Earlier Koliyakkode N. Krishnan Nair had won the seat in 1982, 1987, 1991 and 1996. In the 2006 Assembly elections, J. Arundhati had emerged victorious.
Vamanapuram is one of the seven assembly segments that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Attingal. Aruvikkara, Kattakada, Attingal, Chirayinkeezhu, Nedumangad, and Varkala are the other six assembly constituencies within Attingal Lok Sabha seat.
Located in the Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala, Vamanapuram is composed of nine gram panchayats of Anad, Pullampara, Kallara, Nellanad, Nandiyod, Panavur, Pangode, Peringammala and Vamanapuram.
According to the latest revelations by the Election Commission of India, Vamanapuram assembly constituency, where Female voters outnumber the males, has a total electorate of194181. Of them, 90583 are male voters and 103509 are women voters. Vamanapuram has a sizable population of Ezhava community. Dalits and plantation workers form a large section of the voters in the constituency.
