For 2016 assembly election to Vaikom assembly constituency, A Saneesh Kumar of the Congress is facing the electorate on behalf of the United Democratic front (UDF) which has last won the election in 1991. The BJP-SNDP alliance has also emerged as a force to reckon with in this traditional Left bastion.

Vaikom assembly constituency is currently represented by K. Ajith of Communist Party of India (CPI) who won the seat second time in a row in 2011 by defeating A Saneeshkumar of the Congress by a margin of 10568 votes. In that election to the constituency while 62603 votes were polled by K. Ajith, the Congress candidate received 52035 votes and was followed by BJP’s Ramesh Kavimattam who secured 4512 votes.
The Vaikom assembly constituency had elected K. Ajith in 2006. P Narayanan of the CPI emerged victorious in 2001.
Located in the Kottayam district in Kerala, Vaikom assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Vaikom Municipality as well as the gram panchayats of and Chempu, Maravanthuruthu, Kallara, T.V. Puram, Thalayolaparambu, Thalayazham, Udayanapuram, Vechoor and Velloor. Kallara was delinked from Kaduthuruthy assembly constituency and was integrated with the Vaikom assembly seat.
Reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes, Vaikom is one of the seven assembly constituencies which combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Kottayam. Pala, Kottayam, Ettumanoor, Puthuppally, Kaduthuruthy and Piravom are the other six assembly constituencies within the Kottayam parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 election to the Vaikom assembly constituency, there was a total electorate of 153205. Of them 75949 were and 77256 women.
