Vadakara assembly constituency is all set for a four cornered contest in the coming 2016 assembly elections. While K.K. Rema, wife of slain dissident CPIM leader T.P Chandrasekharan and Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) state committee member, is the candidate of the party, the BJP has nominated M. Rajesh Kumar and hopes to improve its performance. Though UDF has the slight edge in Vadakara, its alliance partner JD (U), which is contesting the seat is plagued by infighting.

Vadakara assembly constituency is currently represented by C.K.Nanu of JD(S) who won the seat in 2011 by defeating of M.K. Premnath of Socialist Janta (Democratic) by a thin margin of 847 votes. In that election to the constituency while 46912 votes were polled by Nanu, M.K. Premnath received 46065 votes and was followed by independent candidate N. Venu who received 10098 votes. N.VENU was supported by RMP.
M.P.Rajan, who entered the fray in behalf of the BJP, was relegated to the fourth place with 6909 votes.
Located in the in the northernmost tip of Kozhikode district, Vadakara is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Lok Sabha constituency of the same name in kerla. Kuttiadi, Koyilandy, Perambra, Thalassery, Kuthuparamba and Nadapuram are the other six constituencies within the Vadakara parliamentary constituency.
Vadakara municipality is covered by the Vadakara Assembly constituency which also contains the grama panchayats of Azhiyoor, Eramala, Chorde and Onchiyam. In the 2011 assembly poll to Vadakara, there was a total electorate of 141564 who were eligible to exercise their franchise. Out of the total electors, 66015 were males and 75549 were females.
