The Uduma Assembly constituency is a traditionally a stronghold of the Left. Barring the 1987 election, when Congress candidate K.P. Kunhikannan won the seat, the LDF has been winning the seat since 1980. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate from Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency T Siddique had secured a handsome lead of 835 votes over his nearest CPIM rival P. Karunakaran in the Udma Assembly segment. Buyed by the performance Congress leader and former Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran has been filed by the party to wrest the seat from the CPIM in 2016 assembly elections. However, the LDF managed to secure a lead of 10,554 votes from the segment in the 2015 local body polls. The LDF has once again fielded its sitting MLA K. Kunhiraman. BJP has nominated Kasaragod district president L. Sreekanth.

K Kunhiraman of the CPI (M) is the sitting MLA of Udma which he won third time in a row in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Congress rival C K Sreedharan by a convincing margin of 11380 votes in a bipolar contest. While 61646 votes were polled by Kunhiraman, the Congress nominee secured 50266 votes and was followed by BJP’s Sunitha Prasanth who got 13073 votes.
Located in the Kasaragod district, Udma assembly constituency is located between the assembly segments of Kasaragod and Kanhangad.
Udma is one of the seven assembly constituencies falling under the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency. Kalliassery, Manjeswar, Kasaragod, Kanhangad, Trikkarpur and Payyannur are the other six assembly segments within the Kasaragod parliamentary constituency.
Udma assembly constituency, which has more female voters than males ones, is home to a total electorate of 195900. Of them, 100707 are women and 95193 are males.
