Sitting Congress MLA and Minister for Excise, Fisheries and Ports, K. Babu, has again nominated by the party to contest the Thripunithura assembly seat sixth time in 2016 assembly polls. K. Babu is facing tough challenge by CPI (M)’s M Swaraj who is the nominee of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Thuravoor Viswambharan.

Thripunithura assembly constituency is currently held by K. Babu who won the seat fifth time in a row in 2011 by defeating his nearest CPIM rival C.M.Dinesh Mani by a margin of 15778 votes in a bipolar poll. While 69886 votes were polled in favour of K. Babu, the CPIM nominee received 54108 votes and was followed by BJP’s Sabu Vargheese who got 4942 votes.
Earlier T.K. Ramakrishnan was elected from the constituency three times.
One of the fourteen assembly constituencies located in the Ernakulam district in Kerala, Thripunithura is home to a large population of Ezhavas.
Thripunithura is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of Ernakulam. Kochi, Kalamassery, Ernakulam, Paravur, Thrikkakara and Vypeen are the other six constituencies within the Ernakulam parliamentary constituency.
Apart from the municipalities of Maradu and Tripunitura, the gram panchayts of Udayamperur, Kumbalam and 11 to 18 divisions in Kochi Corporation are covered by Thripunithura assembly constituency.
In the Thripunithura assembly constituency, female voters outnumber the males. As of now, the constituency has a total electorate of193081. Out of the total electors, 99458 are female voters and 93623 are males.
