Traditionally a seat of the Congress party, Thiruvambady has been allotted to IUML which is a part of the Congress led UDF, While the CPI(M) has nominated its former MLA George M. Thomas to contest the seat in 2016 assembly election, IUML had fielded Koduvally U.M. Ummer, the sitting MLA from Koduvally. In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Congress candidate from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency M.I. Shanavas had secured a lead of just 2,300 votes. In the 2015 local body elections, the LDF had led by 4,900 votes.

C. Moinkutty of the IUML is the sitting MLA of Thiruvambady which he won in 2011 by defeating the then sitting CPM legislator George M. Thomas by a margin of 3833 votes, While votes were polled in favour of C. Moinkutty, George M. Thomas received 52553 votes and was followed by BJP’s Jose Kappattmala who got 3894 votes.
In 2006, CPI (M)’s Mathai Chacko was elected from the seat. After his death CPIM’s George M. Thomas won the seat
IUML’A.V. Abdurahiman Haji had claimed the seat in 1991 and 1996. Cyraic John and P.P. George, both of Congress, had emerged victorious from the seat.
Voters belonging to the Catholic faith are in majority. Hindus and Muslims also form a significant chunk of voters.
Located in the Kozhikode district in Kerala, Thiruvambady assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by Mukkom municipality and six grama panchayats.
Thiruvambady is one of the seven assembly constituencies that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad. Wandoor, Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery, Kalpetta, Eranad and Nilambur are the other six assembly segments within the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
Thiruvambady has a total electorate of 164170. Of them, 81013 are male voters and 83157 are women voters.
