In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the LDF had secured a lead of 9,170 from the Thavanur assembly segment. The sitting independent MLA K.T. Jaleel, backed by Left Democratic Front (LDF), K.T. Jaleel is again in the fray from Thavanur assembly constituency for 2016 assembly polls. P. Iftikkaruddeen has been fielded by the Congress. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections the BJP had polled 13,921 votes in Tavanur assembly segment. The party’s votes in 2011 were 7107. Ravi Thelath is the party’s nominee.

Thavanur assembly constituency is currently held by K.T. Jaleel, who won the seat in 2011 by defeating his nearest Congress rival V.V. Prakash by a margin of 6,854 votes. In that maiden election to the constituency, while 57729 votes were polled in favour of Jaleel, the Congress member received 50875 votes and was followed by BJP’s Nirmala Kuttikrishnan Punnakkal who secured 7107 votes.
One of the sixteen assembly constituencies located in the Malappuram district, Tavanur is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Ponnani. Tanur, Ponnani, Tirurangadi, Tirur, Kottakkal and Thrithala are the other six within the Ponnani parliamentary constituency.
The Tavanur Assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by the grama panchayats of Edappal, Kaladi, Mangalam, Purathur, Tavanur, Thriprangode and Vattamkulam.
Thavanur assembly constituency, which has more female voters than males ones, is home to a total electorate of 1,80,608. Of them, 93,530 are women and 87,078 are males.
