Sulthan Bathery assembly constituency is traditionally a stronghold of the United Democratic Front (UDF). However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Communist party of India (CPI) candidate from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India had secured a lead of 6,640 votes in the Sulthan Bathery assembly segment over his nearest Congress rival M.I. Shanavas who eventually won the Wayanad seat In the local body elections after the lok Sabha polls the LDF won Sulthan Bathery municipality as well as six of the seven grama panchayats which are parts of the Sulthan Bathery constituency.
