Sulthan Bathery assembly constituency is traditionally a stronghold of the United Democratic Front (UDF). However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Communist party of India (CPI) candidate from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India had secured a lead of 6,640 votes in the Sulthan Bathery assembly segment over his nearest Congress rival M.I. Shanavas who eventually won the Wayanad seat In the local body elections after the lok Sabha polls the LDF won Sulthan Bathery municipality as well as six of the seven grama panchayats which are parts of the Sulthan Bathery constituency.

The Congress’s I.C. Balakrishnan is the sitting MLA of Sulthan Bathery which he won in 2011 by defeating E. A. Sankaran of the CPI(M) by a margin of 7,583 votes. While I.C. Balakrishnan polled 71,509 votes, the CPIM nominee received 63,926 votes and was followed by BJP’s Palliyara Raman who received 8829 votes.
Since the inception of the Sulthan Bathery assembly constituency in 1977, the LDF had won twice in 1996 and 2006.
Sulthan Bathery is one of the seven assembly constituencies that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad. Kalpetta, Thiruvambady, Wandoor, Mananthavady, Eranad and Nilambur are the other six assembly segments within the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
Located in the Wayanad district, Sulthan Bathery is one of the two assembly constituencies in Kerala which are reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes.
