A bastion of Left Democratic Front, Shoranur assembly seat had given huge lead to the CPI(M) Lok Sabha candidate from Palakkad M.B. Rajesh over his nearest United Democratic Front rival M.P. Veerendrakumar in the 2014 parliamentary elections. While C. Sangeetha is the nominee of the UDF to contest the Shoranur assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections, PK Shahi has been nominated by the CPIM which has replaced its sitting MLA.

K.S.Saleekha is the sitting MLA of Shoranur which he won on behalf of the CPIM by defeating his nearest Congress rival Santha Jayaram by a margin of 13493 votes in the maiden election to the seat in 2011. While 59616 votes were polled by K.S.Saleekha, the Congress nominee secured 46123 votes and was followed by BJP’s V.B.Muralidharan who received 10562votes.
Santha Jayaram was one of the only seven women candidates fielded by the congress in 2011.
Shoranur assembly constituency, which came into existence in 2011 following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, is one of the seven assembly constituencies which combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Palakkad. Pattambi, Kongad, Mannarkkad, Malampuzha, Ottapalam and Palakkad are the other six assembly constituencies within the Palakkad parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 assembly poll to Shoranur, there was a total electorate of 163885. Out of the total electors, 77338 were males and 86547 were females.
Located in the Palakkad district in Kerala, Nemmara is formed by the areas covered by Shornur Municipality as well as the gram panchayats of Ananganadi, Cherpulasserry, Chalavara, Nellaya, Thrikkadeeri, Vellinezhi and Vaniyamkulam located in the Ottappalam Taluk.
