While the constituency has been favouring the UDF in Lok Sabha elections for the last two decades, CPIM, a constituent of the LDF, has been winning it since 1996. In 2016 local bodies election, the LDF and the UDF have won six grama panchayats each in the Ranni Assembly constituency.
CPIM has once again nominated Raju Abraham who has been representing the seat since 1996. Under the seat sharing arrangement with the BJP has allotted the seat to Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS). Mariamma Cheriyan is in the fray on behalf of UDF.

Raju Abraham of the CPIM is the sitting MLA of Ranni which he won in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Congress rival Peelipose Thomas by a margin of 6614 votes. In that year while 58391 votes were polled by Raju Abraham, the Congress nominee secured 51777 votes and was followed by BJP’s Suresh Kadambari who got just 7442 votes.
Earlier Raju Abraham had also won the Ranni assembly seat in 1996, 2001 and 2006.
Ranni is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of Pathanamthitta. Kanjirappally, Poonjar, Konni, Thiruvalla, Aranmula and Adoor are the other six constituencies within the Pathanamthitta.
Having the lowest number of electorate among the five Assembly segments in the Pathanamthitta district, Ranni has a total of 1,87,128 voters. Of them, 97524 are male voters and 89604 are women voters. Ranni assembly constituency is inhabited by a large number of small and medium rubber plantation workers.
