Poonjar is held by Kerala Congress (M) which is again in the fray for the 2014 assembly elections. While Congress, on the other hand, Congress intends to contest the seat. Poonjar is one of the three assembly constituencies that have been allotted to the BDJS, an alliance partner of the BJP. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls the UDF candidate had secured a thin margin of 2781 votes. Georgekutty Augusthy has been fielded by the Kerala Congress (M). The sitting MLA P.C. George is in the fray as an independent. M.R. Ullas, a former Students Federation of India activist, is the BJP candidate. In all probability Poonjar will likely to witness a four-cornered contest.

Poonjar assembly constituency is currently held by P.C. George of KC (M) who won the seat in 2011 by defeating his nearest independent rival Mohan Thomas by a margin of 15704 votes. While 59809 votes were polled in favour of P.C. George, Mohan Thomas received 44105 votes and was followed by BJP’s Santhosh Kumar who secured 5010 votes.
P.C. George has been representing the Poonjar seat since 1996.
Though located in Kottayam district, Poonjar is a part of Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha constituency. It is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of Pathanamthitta. Kanjirappally, Konni, Thiruvalla, Ranni, Aranmula and Adoor are the other six constituencies within the Pathanamthitta.
Poonjar assembly constituency is formed by the areas covred by the gram panchayats of Erattupetta, Poonjar Thekkekkara, Erumeli, Mundakkayam, Poonjar, Teekoy, Thidanad, Koottickal and Parathode.
In the 2011 election to Poonjar assembly constituency, there were a total electorate of 167928. Of them, 83979 were males and 83949 were females.
