In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, V. Abdurahiman of Left Democratic Front (LDF) had taken a lead of 7,658 votes over UDF’s E.T. Mohammed Basheer in the Ponnani Assembly constituency. While the Ponnani municipality and the local bodies of Nannamukku and Marancheri, which are parts of the Ponnani constituency, are under the control of the LDF, UDF is ruling in the Perumpadappu, Veliyankode and Alankode grama panchayats.
While CPIM has once again nominated its sitting MLA P. Sreeramakrishnan, P. T. Ajay Mohan, the runner-up in 2011, is once again in the fray on behalf of the Congress. K.K. Surendran has been fielded by the BJP and M.M. Shakir is the nominee of the Welfare Party. The SDPI is also in contention, though it has a negligible presence in the constituency.

Ponnani assembly constituency is currently held by P. Sreeramakrishnan who won the seat in 2011 by defeating his nearest Congress rival P. T. Ajay Mohan by a margin of 4101 votes. While 57615 votes were polled in favour of P. Sreeramakrishnan, the Congress member received 53514 votes and was followed by BJP’s V. T. Jayaprakash Master who secured 5680 votes.
In 2006, prominent CPI (M) leader Paloli Mohammed Kutty had trounced M.P. Gangadharan of the Congress by a margin of 28,347 votes.
Ponnani is one of the sixteen assembly constituencies located in the Malappuram district of Kerala.
It is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of the same name in Kerala. Tanur, Tirur, Tirurangadi, Tavanur, Kottakkal and Thrithala are the other six within the Ponnani parliamentary constituency.
Ponnani assembly constituency, which has more female voters than males ones, is home to a total electorate of 184655. Of them 96621 are males and 88034 were females.
