Electoral History and Background

Perumbavoor assembly constituency is currently held by the CPI(M) MLA Saju Paul who won the seat third time in a row by defeating his nearest Congress rival Jaison Joseph by 3382 votes in 2011. While votes were received by Saju Paul, Jaison Joseph polled 56246 votes and was followed by BJP’s O. C. Asokan who got 5464 votes.

Saju Paul’s first win came in 2001 when he defeated the then sitting congress MLA P P Thankachan who had earlier been elected from the constituency in 1982, 1987, 1991 and 1996.

In the first assembly election to Perumbavoor in 1957, P. Govinda Pillai of the Communist Party had emerged victorious. In the subsequent election in 1960, Pillai was defeated by K. M. Chacko of Congress. However, Pillai went on to win the seat in 1965 and 1967 on the ticket of CPI (M).

Located in the Ernakulum district of Kerala, Perumbavoor is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Chalakudy. Kaipamangalam, Kodungalloor, Chalakudy, Angamaly, Aluva and Kunnathunad are the other six within the Chalakudy parliamentary constituency.

Perumbavoor assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by the gram panchayats of Kuvapadi, Okkal, Mudakuzha, Vengoor, Perumbavvor, Venghala, Rayamangalam and Asamanoor

In the 2011 assembly poll to Perumbavoor, the constituency had a total electorate of 154432. Out of the total electors, 78168 were males and 76264 were females.
