Perambra Assembly constituency is traditionally a stronghold of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate from the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency Mullappally Ramachandran had secured a lead over his nearest CPIM s rival A.N. Shamseer in the Perambra Assembly segment. Eight of the ten gram panchayats were won by the LDF in the subsequent local bodies elections. The BJP has some pockets of influence in the constituency.

CPI(M)’s K. Kunhahammed is the sitting MLA of Perambra which he won in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Kerala Congress (M) rival Mohammed Ikbal by a margin of 15269 votes. While 70248 votes were polled by K. Kunhahammed, Mohammed Ikbal secured 54979 votes and was followed by BJP’s P.Chandrika who got just 7214 votes.
In 2006 K. Kunhahammed had defeated James Thekkanadan of Kerala Congress (M). CPIM has been winning the seat since 1980.
Perambra assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by the grama panchayats of Chakkittapara, Arikkulam, Changaroth, Keezhariyur, Cheruvannur, Koothali, Nochad, Meppayur, Thurayur and Perambra.
Located in the Kozhikode district, Perambra Assembly constituency is inhabited by a sizable number of settler-farmers.
Perambra is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency. Thalassery, Kuthuparamba, Vadakara Kuttiadi, Nadapuram and Quilandy are the other six constituencies within the Vadakara parliamentary constituency.
