In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate from the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency E. Ahamed had secured a convincing lead of 23,461 votes over his nearest CPI rival P K Sainaba in the Mankada Assembly segment. While IUML, a constituent of the UDF, has fielded its sitting MLA T.A. Ahamed Kabeer to contest the Mankada seat in 2016 assembly polls, T.K. Rasheedali has entered the fray on behalf of the CPIM. B. Ratheesh is the nominee of the BJP which is not a force to reckon with in the constituency.

T.A. Ahamed Kabeer of IUML is the sitting MLA of who won the seat in 2011 by defeating CPIM's Kadeeja Sathar by a sizeable margin of 23593 votes in a bipolar contest. While 67756 votes were polled in favour of Kabeer, the LDF nominee received 44163 votes and was followed by BJP’s Manikandan K who got 4387 votes.
Muslim League leader K. P. Majeed had won the Mankada assembly seat in 1980, 1982, 1987, 1991 and 1996.
Mankada is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Malappuram. Kondotty, Perinthalmanna, Manjeri, Malappuram, Vengara and Vallikunnu are the other six within the Malappuram parliamentary constituency.
One of the sixteen assembly seats located in the Malappuram district, Mankada assembly constituency is constituted by the areas covered by gram panchayats of Angadipuram, Kuruva, Koottilangadi, Makkaraparamba, Mankada, Puzhakkattiri and Moorkkanad.
In Mankada assembly constituency female voters outnumber males. Out of a total electorate of 191,120 who are eligible to exercise their franchise in the constituency, 97,795 are females and 93,325 are male voters.
