Once a bastion of the CPIM, which represented the seat from 1970 to 2011, Kuthuparamba went in favour of the United Democratic Front in 2011. UDF has again fielded its sitting MLA K.P. Mohanan to contest the Kuthuparamba assembly seat in 2016 assembly polls. K.P. Mohanan is in fray as a nominee of the Janata Dal (United), K.K.Shylaja, former CPIM MLA is the LDF nominee. C. Sadanandan Master has been fielded by the BJP which has a strong presence in the constituency.

Kuthuparamba assembly constituency had elected K.P. Mohanan, who entered the fray on behalf of the JD- S. In that election, Mohanan, son of P. R. Kurup, a former minister in the E. K. Nayanar Government, had defeated LDF backed INL candidate S.A. Puthiyavalappil by a margin of 3303 votes. While 57164 votes were polled in favour of Mohanan, who is currently the Agriculture Minister in the UDF government, S.A. Puthiyavalappil received 53861 votes and was followed by BJP's O.K.Vasu Master who secured 11835 votes.
Pinarayi Vijayan, CPM heavyweight and the party's Polit Bureau member, was elected from the Kuthuparamba seat in 1970 when he wrested the seat from Praja Socialist Party. Vijayan also won the seat in 1977 and 1991.
One of the eleven districts located in the Kannur district of Kerala, Kuthuparamba is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency. Perambra, Thalassery, Nadapuram, Vadakara, Kuttiadi and Quilandy are the other six constituencies within the Vadakara parliamentary constituency.
Kuthuparamba constituency is composed of the municipalities of Kuthuparamba and Panoor Municipality as well as gram panchayats of Kottayam Malabar, Thripangottur, Mokeri, Kunnothuparamba and Patyam.
In the 2011 assembly election to Kuthuparamba, the constituency had a total electorate of 160335. Of them, 85829 were male voters and 74506 were women voters.
