Current Trend

Kunnathur is a bastion of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), which was a constituent of the LDF, is now with the UDF. Since 1970, the party has lost only once. Of late the BJP has made its presence forcefully felt. Under the terms of the alliance with the BJP, the Bharatiya Dharma Jana Sena is contesting the seat and has nominated Thazhava Sahadevan to contest the seat in 2016 assembly elections.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, election, UDF candidate of Mavelikara parliamentary constituency Kodikunnil Suresh of the Congress had secured a thin lead of 87 votes over his nearest LDF rival Chengara Surendran of the CPI in the Kunnathur Assembly segment. However, in 2015 local body elections, all the 10 grama panchayats were won by the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

Electoral History and Background

Kovur Kunjumon is the sitting MLA of Kunnathur which he won third time in a row on behalf of the RSP in 2011 by defeating his nearest congress rival K P Ravi by a margin of 12088 votes. While 71923 votes were polled by Kovur Kunjumon, K P Ravi secured 59835 votes. Raji Prasad of the BJP was relegated to the third place with just 5949 votes.

Kovur Kunjumon had been elected in 2011 and 2006. He has resigned from the party to form RSP (Leninist) and is in the fray as a nominee of the LDF candidate.

Kunnathur is one of the seven assembly segments that combine to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Mavelikkara. Changanassery, Kuttanad, Mavelikkara, Chengannur, Kottarakkara and Pathanapuram are the other six assembly constituency located within the Mavelikkara parliamentary constituency.

Kunnathur is the only assembly constituency in Kollam district reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes and is composed of the ten grama panchayats of Kunnathur, Munroethuruthu, Mynagapally, Poruvazhi, Pavithreshwaram, Sooranad North, Sooranad South, Sasthamcotta, East Kallada and West Kallada.

Inhabited by a large population of cashew workers and farmers, Kunnathur has a total of 205477 registered voters. Of them 98689 are men and 106788 are women.
