While the LDF has fielded K.V. Abdul Khader of Communist Party of India (Marxists) for the third time to contest the Guruvayoor assembly seat in 2016 assembly elections, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has nominated P.M. Sadiqali. Guruvayoor is the only seat in Thrissur district contested by the IUML.

Guruvayoor is currently represented in the Legislative assembly of Kerala by K.V. Abdul Khader who won the seat in 2011 by defeating IUML candidate Asharaf Kokkur by a margin of 9968 votes in a bipolar contest. While 62246 votes were polled by Abdul Khader, the IUML nominee secured 52278 votes and was followed by Dayanandan Mampully of BJP with 9306 votes.
Guruvayoor assembly constituency has been represented by IUML leaders such as P.K.K. Bava, B.V. Seethi Thangal and P.M. Abubacker. But the constituency changed its loyalty in 1994, when the then IUML MLA P.M. Abubacker left the party following a split. In the 1994 by-election due to the resignation of Abubacker, the seat was won by film-maker P.T. Kunjumuhammed who was in the fray as an independent. Kunjumuhammed went on to win the seat in 1996 too.
There is a large concentration of the Muslim voters on the coastal belt of the Guruvayoor assembly constituency which is formed by the areas coved by the municipalities of Guruvayoor and Chavakkad as well as the gram panchayatss of Orunamayur, Punnayur, Kadappuram, Punnayurkulam, Engandiyur and Vadakkekkad of Chavakkad taluk.
Located in Thrissur district of Kerala, Guruvayoor is one of the seven assembly segments the combination of which goes on to create the Lok Sabha constituency of Thrissur. Manalur, Ollur, Thrissur, Nattika , Irinjalakuda and Pudukkad are the other six assembly segments located within Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency.
According to the latest figures by the Election Commission of India, Guruvayoor assembly constituency, where female voters outnumber males, is home to a total electorate of 199007 out of which 93719 are males and 199007 are female voters.
