A bastion of the CPI(M), Dharmadam is all set to elect the LDF in 2016 assembly polls. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election the LDF candidate for the Kannur parliamentary constituency P K Sreemathy had secured a lead of 14961 votes over the UDF nominee K Sudhakaran. In the last 2015 local bodies polls the LDF increased its lead to 27,000 votes. BJP is also steadily increasing its vote share. Mambaram Divakaran has been nominated by the Congress to contest the 2016 assembly election to Dharmadam. CPIM Polit Bureau member and heavyweight Pinarayi Vijayan is the LDF nominee.

In the only election to the Dharmadam assembly constituency in 2011, K.K. Narayanan of the CPI (M) has emerged victorious by defeating his nearest UDF backed independent rival Mambaram Divakarana by a margin of 15162 votes. While Narayanan polled 72354 votes, Divakarana received 57192 votes and was followed by BJP’s C P Sangeetha who secured just 4963 votes.
One of the eleven districts located in the Kannur district of Kerala, Dharmadam came into being through the delimitation exercise in 2011. The constituency was carved out of the erstwhile Edakkad constituency.
Dharmadam is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency. Taliparamba, Kannur, Irikkur, Azhikode, Mattannur and Peravoor are the other six constituencies with the Kannur parliamentary constituency.
In the 2011 assembly election to Dharmadam constituency, where female voters outnumber males, was home to a total electorate 163674 of out of which 73410 were males and 90264 were female voters.
