In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the RSP’s Lok Sabha candidate of Kollam Lok Sabha N.K. Premachandran had secured a lead over his nearest CPIM rival M.A. Baby in the Chathannoor assembly segment. However, the LDF won the Paravur municipality and all the grama panchayats. Chathannoor is a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (CPI). However, the constituency has stood with the Congress quite a number of times.

G.S. Jayalal of the CPI is the sitting MLA of Chathannoor which he won second time in arrow in 2011 by trouncing his nearest Congress rival Bindu Krishna by a margin of 12589 votes. In the election to the seat in that year, while 60187 votes were polled by G.S. Jayala, Bindu Krishna secured 47598 votes. Izhakkanela Sudhakaran of the BJP was relegated to the third place with 3839 votes.
Prominent CPI leaders who were earlier elected from the Chathannoor assembly seat are J. Chitanranjan, N. Anirudhan and P. Ravindran. Congress leader and former KPCC president C.V. Padmarajan was also elected from the Chathannoor seat.
Chathannoor is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Kollam Lok Sabha constituency. Chavara, Chadayamangalam, Punalur, Kollam, Kundara and Eravipuram are the other six constituencies with the Kollam parliamentary constituency.
Located in the Kollam district in Kerala, Chathannoor assembly constituency is composed of the municipality of Paravur and the grama panchayats of Adichanallur, Kalluvathukkal, Poothakulam, Chathannur and Pooyapally.
There are 175090 registered voters in Chathannoor, among them 94879 are women and 89211 men. The constituency has a heavy concentration of handloom, cashew and coir industries.
