A stronghold of the Congress from 1991, the Adoor assembly seat went in favour of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in 2011. While the Communist Party of India (CPI) had again nominated its sitting legislator to contest the seat in the coming 2016 assembly polls, K.K. Shaju is in the fray on behalf of the Congress under the banner of United Democratic front (UDF). P. Sudheer of the BJP is also a key contestant in the Adoor Assembly constituency.

Adoor assembly constituency is currently held by of Chittayam Gopakumar of the Communist Party of India who wrested the seat from the Congress by defeating its candidate Pandalam Sudhakaran in 2011 by a thin margin of 607 votes. While 63501 votes were polled in favour of Chittayam Gopakumar, Pandalam Sudhakaran, a former minister, received 62894 votes and was followed by BJP’s K.K.Sasi who obtained 6210 votes.
Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had represented the constituency from 1991 to 2011. He was elected from the Kottayam assembly seat in 2011.
Located in the Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, Adoor assembly constituency is inhabited by a large number of rubber and cashew plantation workers. The assembly constituency is composed of the Adoor municipality and the eight grama panchayats of Pandalam-Thekkekkara, Pandalam, Ezhamkulam, Thumpamon, Aerath, Kodumon, Pallickal and Kadambanad.
Reserved for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Adoor is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of Pathanamthitta. Poonjar, Kanjirappally, Konni, Thiruvalla, Ranni and Aranmula are the other six constituencies within the Pathanamthitta.
In the 2011 election to Adoor assembly constituency, there were a total electorate of 194014. Of them, 89881 were males and 104133 were females.
