Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which spearheads the cause of a separate state of Gorkhaland in West Bengal, has a major presence in Kalchini. Trinamool Congress is also striving hard to make its presence felt. Once a stronghold of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Kalchini is all set to witness mutt-cornered contest among the parties. The party which will receive the support of the GJM will be on a good wicket to claim Kalchini.

Wilson Champamari is the sitting MLA of Kalchini which he won second time in 2011 by defeating his nearest RSP rival Binay Bhusan Kerketta by 7245 votes in a four cornered contest.
While 46455 votes were polled in favour of Wilson Champamari who entered the fray as an independent backed by GJM, the RSP nominee secured 39210 votes and was followed by Jharkhand Mukti Morchaís Sandip Ekka who got 36276 votes. Paban Kumar Lakra, who contested on behalf of TMC, was relegated to the fourth place with 27662 votes. Paban Kumar Lakra had unsuccessfully contest the Alipurduars parliamentary seat in 2009 as a TMC nominee.
Earlier, RSPís Manohar Tirkey has won Kalchini in 1977, 1982, 1991 and 1996.
Reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes, Kalchini assembly constituency is situated in the newly created district of Alipurduar in West Bengal. A[art from the Kalchini block, the constituency is composed of Majherdabri gram panchayat of Alipurduar II block.
Kalchini is one of the seven assembly segments that form part of the Alipurduars parliamentary constituency.
