Though BJP secured leads in all the 17 civic wards in Islampur municipality in 2014 parliamentary elections, the party could not keep the momentum in 2015 election to Islampur municipality which went in favour of the Congress. In fact while in 2014 the BJP got 15,291 votes in the municipality, the Congress received 6,214 votes. In 2014 the BJP got a lead of 2,324 votes over Trinamul from the Islampur Assembly segment, which is currently held by TMC MLA Abdul Karim Chowdhury.

Abdul Karim Chowdhury was elected from Islampur in 2011 by defeating his nearest rival Sayeda Farhat Afroz of CPM by 11272 votes. While 49326 votes were polled in favour of Abdul Karim, the CPM candidate received 38054 votes and was followed by Independent candidate Kanaia Lal Agarwal who got 20,870 votes.
Kanaia Lal Agarwal was backed by Deepa Dasmushi, the Congress leader and wife of former Union minister P R Dasmunshi, despite the fact that Congress was in alliance with the TMC in 2011. Earlier Abdul Karim Chowdhury had also represented Islampur from 1991 to 2006.
Located in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, Islampur is composed of Islampur municipality, and Agdimti Khanti, Gaisal II, Gaisal I, Gunjaria, Matikunda I, Matikunda II, Islampur, Panditpota I, Panditpota II, Ramganj I and Ramganj II gram panchayats of Islampur block.
Islampur is one of the seven assembly segments falling under the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat. Earlier the constituency was the part of Darjeeling parliamentary constituency. Of a total number of 150195 electors eligible to cast their votes in the 2011 assembly election to Islampur, there were 79968 males and 70227 females.
