Though the BJP candidate from the Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency, Shyama Charan Shukla, had won the seat in 2014 by defeating his nearest rival and then sitting SP MP Rewati Raman Singh, the former had trailed behind the latter in the Meja assembly segment by 1052 votes.
