In the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Matera assembly constituency had given the SP candidate of Bahraich parliamentary seat Shabbir Ahmad a lead of 12872 votes over her nearest BJP rival Sadhavi Savitri Bai Phule who however, went on to win the Lok Sabha seat. BSP has nominated Sultan Muhammad Khan to contest the coming 2017 assembly election to Matera.
