Though Harchandpur is the pocket borough of the Nehru- Gandhi family, the seat went in favour of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the last assembly elections in 2012. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi had secured a massive lead of 64889 votes over his nearest BJP rival in the Harchandpur assembly segment which forms part of Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency.
