In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had secured a lead of 22364 votes over his nearest BJP rival and currently Union Cabinet Minister Smriti Irani in the Gauriganj assembly segment which forms part of the Amethi parliamentary seat. However, Gauriganj seat went in favour of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2012. BSP has nominated Vijay Kishore Tiwari for the coming 2017 assembly election to Gauriganj.
