Once a pocket borough of Ajay Pratap Singh, Colonelganj went in favour of the SP in 2012. In 2014 parliamentary general elections, the BJP candidate from Kaiserganj parliamentary seat, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had led over his nearest SP rival Pandit Singh by a margin of 18486 votes in the Colonelganj assembly segment.
