Though in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP candidate from Sambhal parliamentary seat, Satyapal Singh Saini had secured a lead of 12113 votes in the Bilari assembly segment where his nearest rival was Shafiq- ur Rahman Barq of Samajwadi Party, the SP won the 2017 bye-election to the Bilari seat by defeating BJP by 7,093 votes. However, it is worth mentioning that Mayawati-led BSP did not participate in the bye-election.
