Ram Govind Chowdhari is the sitting MLA of Bansdih which he won in 2012 on behalf of SP by defeating his nearest BJP rival Ketakee Singh by a handsome margin of 22877 votes in a multi-cornered contest. While Ram Govind, a minister in the Akhilesh government, secured 52085 votes, the BJP nominee bagged 29208 votes and was followed by SBSP’s Deenbandhoo who got 28387 votes. Bade Lal of the BSP was relegated to the fourth place with 24332 votes.
Bachcha Pathak, who entered the fray on behalf of the Congress, managed to bag 21799 votes to finish fifth whereas Shiv Shanker of JD (U) came sixth with 20222 votes.
In 2007 Shiv Shanker, then the BSP nominee, won the Bansdih assembly seat by defeating the sitting MLA Ram Govind Ram Chowdhari who was elected in 2002. Prior to that, Congress’s Bachcha Pathak had represented the seat from 1991 to 2002.
Bansdih is one of the five assembly segments falling under the parliamentary seat of Salempur. Bhatpar Rani, Salempur, Belthara Road and Sikanderpur are the other four assembly constituencies within Salempur parliamentary constituency
In the 2012 assembly election to Bansdih, the constituency had a total of 359415 registered voters. Of them, 199438 were males, 159968 were female voters and 9 were transgenders.
Located in the Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, Bansdih assembly constituency is formed by the areas covered by the Tehsil of the same name.
