In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi had secured a lead of 47911 votes over his nearest BJP rival Ajay Agrawal in the Bachhrawan assembly segment which forms part of the Rae Bareli parliamentary seat. However in 2012, Bachhrawan seat went in favour of the Samajwadi Party (SP) which did not contest the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in 2014.
