Azamgarh assembly constituency is the stronghold of the Samajwadi Party (SP) whose candidate Mulayam Singh Yadav had led from the seat by 11859 votes over his nearest BJP rival Ramakant Yadav despite the Modi wave that found its fullest expression in the state of Uttar Pradesh. In 2012 SP had won nine out of the ten assembly seats in Azamgarh district in which the Azamgarh assembly is a part.
