In 2014 parliamentary general elections, the BJP candidate from Garhwal Lok Sabha seat, Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, had established a lead of 1132 votes over his nearest Congress rival Harak Singh Rawat in the Srinagar assembly segment.
Srinagar assembly seat is currently held by Congress legislator Ganesh Godiyal who won the seat in 2012 by defeating Dhan Singh Rawat of BJP by a margin of 5063 votes in a bipolar contest. In that election to the seat while 27993 votes were received by Ganesh Godiyal, the BJP candidate got 22930 votes. The remaining six candidates failed to save their deposits. In 2007, the seat went in favour of BJP whose nominee Brijmohan Kotwal emerged victorious by defeating the then sitting Congress MLA Sunderlal Manderwal who had won the seat in 2002 by trouncing the former.
One of the six assembly constituencies located in the Garhwal district in Uttrakhand, Srinagar was a reserved seat for scheduled castes before 2012.
PCs Katulsyun, Chlansyun of Srinagar KC & Srinagar MB of Srinagar Tehsil as well as KCs Chakisain & Thalisain of Thalisain Tehsil are covered by assembly constituency which also contains under its jurisdiction PCs Ghurdaursyun, Bidolsyun, Balikandarsyun of Pabbo KC of Pauri Tehsil.
Srinagar is one of the fourteen assembly segments the combination of which creates the Lok Sabha constituency of Garhwal.
Pauri, Yamkeshwar, Narendranagar, Deoprayag, Rudraprayag, Kedarnath, Karnprayag, Tharali, Badrinath, Chaubattakhal, Lansdowne, Kotdwar and Ramnagar are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within Garhwal parliamentary constituency.
In the 2012 assembly election to Srinagar, the constituency had a total of 92823 registered voters. Of them, 46906 were males and 45917 were female voters.
