A keen contest among the Congress and BJP is on the cards for the coming 2017 assembly election to Pirankaliyar. Though the BJP candidate from the Hardwar Lok Sabha constituency, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, had won the parliamentary seat in 2014, he had trailed behind the Congress nominee Renuka Rawat in the Pirankaliyar assembly segment by 1980 votes. .
Presently Pirankaliyar is represented in the legislative assembly of Uttrakhand by Congress’s Furkan Ahmad who won the seat in 2012 by defeating Shahzad of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by a margin of 1944 votes in a triangular contest. In that election to the seat while 25870 votes were received by Furkan Ahmad, the BSP candidate got 23926 votes and was followed by BJP’s Shyambeer who received 21648 votes. The remaining thirteen contestants forfeited their deposits.
Located in the Hardwar district in Uttrakhand, Pirankaliyar assembly constituency, which came into being before 2011 following the recommendations of the delimitation commission, is formed by the areas covered by PCs Gumawala, Imlikhera Dharampur, Mohammadpur Panda, Rampur, Pirankaliyar, Dhanori, Dolatpur, Badheri Rajputan, Bhounri, Margubpur Didaheri, Danderi Khwajgipur, Belra of Roorkee KC and PC Dariyapur Dayalpur of Bhagwanpur KC of Roorkee Tehsil.
Pirankaliyar is one of the fourteen assembly segments falling under the Lok Sabha constituency of Hardwar. Jhabrera, Bhagwanpur, Jwalapur, B.H.E.L. Ranipur, Hardwar, Rishikesh, Doiwala, Dharampur, Roorkee, Khanpur, Manglaur, Laksar and Hardwar Rural are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within Hardwar parliamentary constituency.
A total of 91933 electors were eligible to vote in the 2012 assembly election to Pirankaliyar. Of them, 49879 were males and 42054 were female voters.
