In 2014 parliamentary general elections, the BJP candidate from Garhwal Lok Sabha seat, Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, had established a lead of 7004 votes over his nearest Congress rival Harak Singh Rawat in the Pauri assembly segment. .
Presently Pauri is represented in the legislative assembly of Uttrakhand by Congress’s Sunder Lal Mandrawal who won the seat in 2012 by defeating Ghananand of BJP by a margin of 2906 votes in a bipolar contest. In that election to the seat while 19389 votes were received by Sunder Lal Mandrawal, the BJP candidate got 16483 votes and was followed by Uttarakhand Raksha Morcha’s Manohar Lal who received 6685 votes. Bhagwan Singh Tamta, who entered the fray on behalf of the BSP, was relegated to the fourth place with just 1102 votes.
While in 2002, the seat went in favour of Congress’s Narendra Singh Bhandri, in the next assembly election in 2007, independent candidate Yashpal Benam emerged victorious. On both occasions, Tierath Singh Rawat was the runner-up.
Reserved for the candidates belonging to the scheduled castes, Pauri assembly constituency was an open seat before 2012.
One of the six assembly constituencies located in the Garhwal district in Uttrakhand, Pauri assembly constituency is constituted by the areas covered by KCs Pauri, Kot, Nahsain, Mundneshwar, Agrora and Pauri NP of Pauri Tehsil as well as PCs Rawatsyun, Bangarsyun and Edwalsyun of Srinagar KC of Srinagar Tehsil.
Pauri is one of the fourteen assembly segments the combination of which creates the Lok Sabha constituency of Garhwal.
Yamkeshwar, Narendranagar, Deoprayag, Rudraprayag, Kedarnath, Karnprayag, Tharali, Badrinath, Srinagar, Chaubattakhal, Pauri, Kotdwar and Ramnagar are the other thirteen assembly constituencies within Garhwal parliamentary constituency.
In the 2012 assembly election to Pauri, a total electorate of 85182 was eligible to exercise their franchise in the assembly segment. Out of the total electors, 41955 were males and 43227 were females.
